'GOOD LITTLE OUTBOARD FOR THE YACHT TENDER WITH RESERVATIONS'
Strengths: 4 stroke so no oil to add in seperate tank or to mix. Air cooling so you can start it and run it out of the water for maintenance and checking although it can be a dangerous exercise with the prop liable to spin from startup. You don't have to run fresh water through it to clear out the salt after a trip Easy to start, rotates 360 deg.for direction of thrust. Point and squirt with no gear change. Reasonably economic. Can be laid flat for storage. Well made mechanics... Light weight, the smaller ladies can manage its weight fairly comfortably. Should be easy to start but I found if you don't switch off the fuel and close the top vent when laid flat, then it can flood and not only leaks when stored but is a cow to start. Do it right and it behaves impeccably
Weaknesses: It may pay to just freshwater rinse off the shaft and bottom bearing and the tilt mechanism which can get stiff with salt. Small fuel tank with limited range. On startup you can be unbalanced when the power comes in when letting the choke off. Remember to throttle back then let the choke off as the gear engages unlike a normal geared engine...potentially dangerous! Not as powerful as some 2 strokes in the 2.5 to 3.0 h.p range When laid flat it must only be laid on one side otherwise crankcase oil gets up on top of the piston etc. Lid/catches a bit flimsey. Not as quiet as I would like but far better than the average 2 stroke.
Overall: Once you are used to it I would say great value and very suitable as a small tender engine.
Strengths: smooth easy start, light and easy to handle especially when taking on and off the tender, all the hand holds and grips seem to be just where you want them. Comes with clear documentation and nice little toolkit.
It runs so much better than any 2 stroke I've ever tried and I think it runs very quite. Its very economical of fuel - so much better than a 2 stroke and perhaps most importantly starts first time every time - when did a 2 stroke ever do that?
I really like having an air cooled engine - can do engine run checks etc easying at home or whilst engine is still onboard.
Weaknesses: has to be stowed more carefully that a 2 stroke but will lie flat.
Overall: Excellent light weight engine with Honda quality. You wont be disappointed.
Strengths: Easily manhandled and stowed on its side. Nicely designed. Simple controls. Pushes my 2.6m inflatable at 5kts. Air cooling promises more reliability (especially in sea service)?
Weaknesses: Centrifugal clutch needs a little practice to avoid kangaroo-hopping. Bit noisier than water-cooled equivalents.
Overall: Less hassle than water cooled version, but a bit louder.
