'EASY USE, SAFE AND RELIABLE'
Strengths:
Easy to fill and use. Nicely finished, easy to clean, fast and efficient.
Weaknesses:
Blackens the bottoms of the pans.
The smell in the cabin can start off the 'mal de mer'at the start of the trips.
Overall:
Having used the 'original' origo meths cooker with the slide controls, the new one is just like using a brand new hob at home!
I think it's really a great bit of kit.

'SAFE, RELIABLE SIMPLICITY'
Strengths:
Simple - virtually no moving parts and no electronics. Stand alone installation. Safe to use. It always works.
Weaknesses:
A bit smelly perhaps with denatured alcohol. Needs similar ventilation to gas. Gimble design clever but clearances between cooker sides and gimbals are too fine.
Overall:
The Origo replaced a sadly unreliable and 4 times as expensive Wallas diesel hob. It's such a pleasure to have something that lights everytime and still doesn't need the complications of a gas installation.

'CONVENIENT, ADEQUATE, SIMPLE'
Strengths:
Simple and as safe as a flame can be. Does the job. Easy to clean. Low fire risk.
Weaknesses:
Slower than pressurised gas. Slightly smelly, needs ventilation. Difficult to do a larger meal, too slow too small. Can blow out or flame blows to one side. Hard to see flame.
Overall:
Convenient, adequate, simple.

'SIMPLE TO USE'
Weaknesses:
There may be a real danger of CO poisoning if ventilation not excellent. Should not be used to heat cabin!Smelly. Be careful not to overfill as expanded fuel can cause fire when boat is heeled.
Overall:
Quite a useful simple but smelly stove

'QUICK SIMPLE TO USE-SMELLY, MUST BE VENTILATED'
Strengths:
Quick and easy to use,lights/heats quickly and is very controllable. Meths relatively safe but flames not easily seen on spilt fuel.Sensible price.Fuel cells do not spill once filled.Reasonably simple to clean. I found spares via the internet without difficulty. NO GAS ON BOARD!unless you count the lighter which you will need.
Weaknesses:
Smelly, fumes must be ventilated.Another fuel to buy and store. Fuel cells not easy to fill in 'a sea'. Advise having small sealed container with thin spout to top up at sea.I have used one with extended gimbles and works ok. Meths not cheap.
Overall:
An excellent 'poor mans' stove as long as you can put up with the ventilation aspect. Not good as a general boatheater in cold weather due to ventilation needed.

[Update 10/01/08] AFTER 2 SEASONS AND THINKING I MAY UPRATE MY STOVE, I HAVE RECONSIDERED AND FEEL THAT MY MONEY IS BETTER SPENT ON SAFETY ITEMS. SO PLEASED I DON'T HAVE GAS WORRIES AND SO IS MY INSURANCE COMPANY.

'THE PERFECT SOLUTION - GET RID OF GAS!'
Strengths:
The safety aspects of getting rid of gas are obvious - insurance companies will agree. But the Origo also means you get rid of the 2 big gas bottles and their container, and replace them with a plastic jerry can of fuel that you can store anywhere. Which gives you quite a bit of extra locker space. And no need to hump a heavy gas bottle ashore, hoping to find somewhere to swap it.In France, you can buy alcool a bruler in any supermarket - cheap, and no meths smell.
Weaknesses:
Very slight smell?
Overall:
Total peace of mind. No "did we switch the gas off" worries ever again.
A very effective cooker - just as good as gas.

'EXCELLENT PRODUCT, SIMPLE BUT SAFE AND EFFECTIVE'
Strengths:
I've owned and used one of these for years. Originally got it for the safety aspect. Very efficient and cheap to run. Lucky enough to have an agricultural store close that supplies me with Meths. Much cheaper to run than gas!
Weaknesses:
Spares and additions to the range are not easy to find. The fuel can also be a challenge but given the strengths its worth the aggro.
Overall:
Excellent product, good alternative to anything else out there in the market place.

'SIMPLE TO USE AND EFFECTIVE'
Strengths:
Enables easy onboard cooking, fuss-free and, so far, idiot-proof! No worries about gas build-up.
Weaknesses:
Getting fuel, as it's a restricted substance.
Overall:
I was sceptical about having a spirit stove (it came with the boat), and expected to replace it with a gas version. However I'm now converted and recommend this device without reservation.

'A GOOD REPLACEMENT POTENTIAL BOMB OF OLD GAS COOKER !'
Strengths:
Yes, the flame adjustment is remarkably effective from simmer to fast boil. Very little meths smell too, so the combustion is efficient.
Weaknesses:
The springy support of one of the burner/tanks has failed at the spot weld to the base casing. I will have to drill & bolt it somehow. Also, meths is expensive to obtain in quantity.
Overall:
A very good product !!
