'THE NAVTEX ENGINE FEEDS WEATHER DATA TO YOUR LAPTOP '
Strengths:
The weather data is collected automatically and stored in the engine till it is accessed via the laptop. So theoretically you don't have to listen to the radio at odd times of the day to get your weather information. Installation is easy to achieve with a minimum of electrical knowledge.
Weaknesses:
Most new laptops do not have serial ports, so a USB adaptor is needed to allow connection to the USB port. This caused me the most problems, as it was not straight forward. The adaptor I bought would not initially link the navtex software to the engine. That is not the fault of NASA but if they had the option of USB outputs on their engine it would not be necessary to buy extras to make the connection. The weather information received is dependant on the various agencies who transmit it and it is not as standard as you might expect. Variations in the information sent can cause confusion.
Overall:
Good quality equipment let down by details.

'Shows all needed GPS Data on deck, works with any NMEA GPS'
Strengths:
Simple to instal (no big holes to cut), works with any NMEA GPS, very viewable, large clear display, shows all required GBS plotter or GPS receiver data remotely from GPS/GPS Plotter. Particularly useful for sailing in confined waters or very rough weather as the data the helmsman needs is visible at all times. The things one needs to know like bearing to waypoint, distance to waypoint, course made good, speed made good are there at a glance. The display is waterproof (3 seasons on deck) and robust, even when kicked by heavy seaboots! It is enexpensive and (unless one navigates from on deck) every boat should have one!
Weaknesses:
None that I have found!
Overall:
A real must for any boat, it takes away all the, "can you have a quick look at the GPS/Plotter and tell me what the bearing is to the wapoint" conversations.
When racing sighted next to the log one can immediately see the effect of tides. The rolling roa/ cross track erropr being particularly useful to ensure an exact rhumb line is sailed in "round the cans" racing.
