Description: 10 times thinner than traditional antifouling new VC 17M Extra avoids the age-old problem of ‘build up’ of antifouling. Because it contains Teflon®, VC 17M Extra antifouling has a super smooth, fast surface without requiring sanding, which minimises drag. This new formulation is suitable for both cruising and racing boats. Thinners: VC General Thinner

'EXPENSIVE, BUT APPARENTLY VERY EFFICIENT ANTIFOULING'
Strengths:
This stuff really seems to work, at least in our region of the West Coast of Scotland. It is easy to put on, as it is very thin, coverage is good, and it is recoatable in very short time. The next years layers can be put on with little preparation work - a pressure wash and scrub with a hard deck scrub seems to do the job just fine.
Weaknesses:
It is a 2 part mix which goes off in 24 hours or so once mixed. Those bits left unpainted under the legs, trestles etc that require painting when your boat is in the lift or on the crane need unmixed product left out for the boatyard (or you) to mix and apply during the launch - or alternatively apply the whole lot in the day leading up to your launch. It is expensive compared to other antifouls, and apparently it is not overcoatable by anything other than itself (or VC Offshore), so a change of antifouling means stripping it all off. We find it erodes very quickly on the leading edges of the rudders and keel, so apply a few extra coats in these areas.
Overall:
I'll stick with it. The boat was delivered onto Windermere where she sat for a couple of years on the original antifouling, and although covered in weed when we took her out for a test sail, a large amount had cleaned off after a couple of hours. Due to the overcoating implications, we stuck with it when we moved the boat to Oban, and when she came out at the end of last season, the bottom was a delight - and we are not high mileage users! Apart from the limitations on the rudders & keel as noted, I'd give VC17 top marks - we may try something else in the future on the rudders, but the hull is getting this again next year!
