'A SOUND ALTERNATIVE TO VARNISH'
Strengths:
I have heard this described as a product that people either swear by or swear at. I have used it for the last 18 months for the renovation of the interior woodwork of my boat and in my experience it's not quite as straightforward as it says on the tin.

When preparing the wood, either new or old, don't just stop at a sanded finish. Prior to any application, polish the wood with medium grade wire wool. This will eventually give a better finish.

The instructions tell you to keep soaking it in on the first day then after 3 days the boat can be put into service. If you do this you are likely to come back three days later and sware at it because (in my experience) the wood will look matt, drab and horrible. Fear not the oil has just done its job and has soaked right in to the wood. You will now need to re-coat it but this time you need to be a little more careful as it wil not soak in as much and you need to keep an eye on it because if left for too long it will start to go sticky, if this happens just wipe the complete surface with a rag wetted with more deks olje and this will remove the excess then just leave it.

This process may need to be repeated 3 or 4 times depending on the absorbancy of the wood and after each application, all of the excess should be removed. If a film of the deks olje is left any where, corners etc it will go like congealed marmalade but can easily be removed with wire wool.

Finally the woodwork will take on a beautiful satin appearance and if you do ding anything, you just wipe more on, let it soak in then wipe off the excess.
Weaknesses:
The process may be too slow for the professional boatbuilder. It is also expensive, like he same price as whisky which is mostly tax.
Overall:
I'm convinced that wood will age much more gracefully with this type of finish than varnish. Also, long term maintenance should be easier
