    More about Force 4
Average Rating: 3 out of 5
    No. of Reviews: 4
    RRP: £165
    Year: 2005

    Description:
The Force 4 Top Climber is safe to use, it works on a jammer system enabling you to hoist yourself up the mast or come down in complete control. It packs down neatly for stowing, and the bag doubles as a tool bag so that you can take the tools up the mast with you.

'EXCELLENT FOR GETTING TO THE TOP IF SINGLE HANDED.'
    Strengths:
Well stitched with high quality fittings. Good instructions. Clip on tool bag is handy. As safe as can be, given its limitations. Quite comfortable seat allows hands free working.
    Weaknesses:
Slow but safe progress. The reason why this kit cannot be considered 100%safe is that it depends entirely on the strength of the halyard, block and shackle at the top of the mast taking the load.
    Overall:
Easy to use. The climber must be sure that the halyard, block and shackle is in excellent condition and (far)stronger than necessary. It could therefore be potentially dangerous to climb on someone else's vessel if you do not know for certain the reliability of the fittings taking the load. Sensible to clip on to something else with a chest harness where possible .

    '80%RELIABILITY??????'
    Overall:
80% RELIABILTY? SOUNDS A BIT DODGY TO ME.
NOT THE SORT OF REPORTED RELIABILITY YOU WANT OUT AT SEA, ON YOUR OWN, IN A BLOW UP THE MAST IS IT?
I COULDN'T COMMENT ON PERFORMANCE SO ENTERED THE LOWEST SCORE SO AS TO MAKE THIS COMMENT

    'A BRILLIANT DEVICE'
    Strengths:
Innexpensive, indestructible, far safer than gong up on a halliard!
    Weaknesses:
The jammer takes a bit of getting used to and you can snag your hand on the way down, Wearing a decent pair of working gloves makes it an easier proposition
    Overall:
I've had one for years and use it regularly. With practice it is very easy to use and far safer than relying on someone else serging the halliard on a winch!

'A PORTABLE MAST CLIMBING SYSTEM FOR HE SINGLE-HANDED USER'
    Strengths:
Enables the user to scale a mast by using existing halyards. Fail-safe system keeps the climber in control at all times.
    Weaknesses:
Can take some time to ascend a mast.
    Overall:
For going aloft single handed, the Top Climber provides a one-off solution. It operates using a friction jamming method. An upper jammer attached to a body harness and a lower jammer connected to webbing stirrups are progressively moved up a halyard one step at a time. The halyard is secured to a cleat at the base of the mast or on deck.
