Helly Hansen Frost baselayer

Helly Hansen Frost baselayer

If like me you are starting to reach to the back of the wardrobe to bring the more substantial items of clothing out of hibernation, this may be of interest to you. Helly Hansen have bought out a whole new range of thermal base layers, not only offering you warmth and wicking, but also a selection of vibrant colours that could brighten up any winter's day.

Designed for warmth and comfort, the Helly Hansen Frost is a lightweight base layer designed for comfort and warmth. Using Lifa T3 technology, the fabric traps heat and moves excess moisture away from your skin to keep you dry and also maintains optimal body temperature.

New Zealand Merino wool has been added to the outside of the top for further thermal qualities. Retailing at £45 the Frost is available is sizes XS-XXL and also comes in a range of colours including Angora/Aquarius/Atlantic, Hot Pink/White and Black/Penguin/Lime for women and Tangerine/Red, Dark Blue/Amparo and Khaki/Silver/Copper for men.

The base layer is so lightweight and close fitting that it acts as if it were a second skin. The ladies' version is sympathetic to a woman's physique. With no seams next to your skin, there is nothing to rub or irritate. I was able to wear it day and night without feeling uncomfortable or having the need to change.

I was impressed with the design of the Helly Hansen Frost. The jewel colours not only make the garments stylish, but are also more practical. The darker tones don't show up some stains as much as some of the lighter shades other companies have adopted. The top doesn't look too technical, so if worn in the club house as a casual jumper you wouldn't feel out of place.

Its wicking is fantastic. Even when wet water is directed away from your skin very quickly and spread out over a wider surface area enabling it to dry at an increased rate. You may feel that £45 is too high a price tag for essentially an undergarment, but this is down to its construction.

Apart from being preferable next to your skin, natural fibres can also reduce any body odour that some experience with synthetics. Merino wool is also a good choice as it keeps its shape better than other wools.

Verdict

The Helly Hansen Frost base layer keeps you warm and dry without being restrictive or abrasive at all. It has good construction and washes well and can even be doubled up as casual clothes when not on the water. If you feel it is a little beyond your budget, it would be a good one to ask for this Christmas.
