The amphibious Garmin GPSMAP 292

Garmin GPSMAP 292

The idea of having a GPS that can switch from water to road use with the touch of a button isn't a new idea, but more often than not people are opting for separate systems.

This is due to a number of factors including cost and lack of memory, but most importantly how easy it is to make the transition. Garmin may just have come up with a solution in their latest offering, the GPSMAP 292. Whether you want a chartplotter or directions to mother-in-law's, this little tchotchke appears to have it all.

Pre-loaded with UK and Ireland BlueChart g2 marine map detail, the Garmin 292 boasts an enhanced worldwide basemap for extra-detailed depictions of shorelines, roads and surface features. The sunlight-readable, 5-inch TFT display features improved graphics, perfect for showing multiple routes with the option of a mariner's-eye-view 3D map perspective. With the capability to store 3,000 waypoints and 50 reversible routes with up to 300 points each; you are going to have to travel a long way to make use of all of this gadgetry's functions.

Only having tinkered with a display model at the Southampton Boat Show, my experience with the GPSMAP 292 is limited. However, I was extremely impressed with one feature in particular. Being able to see overhead images would have been a godsend in some of the mooring incidents I have witnessed. This alone has got to earn Garmin a big thumbs up from the MainSail crew. Another function that I believe would prove incredibly useful is that not only can you find where your nearest amenities are while on the motor way, you can also pinpoint facilities such as fuelling stations while out on the water.

I am not convinced that from the boat to the car and back is as easy a transition as the manufacturers make out. The product's size and design suggest that it might not be robust enough to cope with a constantly changing environment. Nevertheless I will reserve judgment until we can get one in for a full product review.
