The Fjord oilskins are the latest item to be launched into the Helly Hansen sailing range. The jacket's three-quarter length design makes for increased comfort in variable weather conditions, while the trousers sport articulated reinforced seat and knees for increased protection. The waterproof breathable design is available in a range of colours, in both masculine and feminine styles, retailing at around £235 for the set and is available in sizes XS-XL.
The Helly Hansen Lifa mesh and taffeta lining is certainly an outstanding addition to the design. The fabric is very comfortable, even next to bare skin, and makes for a lightweight jacket. It also has fantastic wicking abilities, drying with ease while being worn, leaving no dampness next to your skin. Unfortunately the trousers don't boast the same material and took a little longer to dry.
Another excellent feature is the double cuff on the sleeves of the Fjord jacket. It offers extra protection and if you are unlucky enough to be submerged while wearing these oilskins; it keeps a layer of water next to your skin, similar to a wetsuit, so you don't lose so much body heat.
The ergonomical fit is convenient and flattering, with no large quantities of dormant fabric restricting movement. The elasticated waist and braces offer a variable fit which you can adjust to compliment your figure, without having to change sizes to accommodate a large bust or waist. The women's trouser includes a long side zip for easy use of drop seat whilst wearing a jacket, though this does mean you have to compromise on the pocket positioning; a chest pocket isn't so useful while your jacket is fastened.
I was unimpressed, as I have been before with Helly Hansen, that the design wasn't up to ISAF racing standards. A signal yellow hood and adequate reflective patches aren't included in the Fjord jacket so the set would be no good for offshore racing. Another disappointment was a lack of a gusset on the trouser zip. Though the storm flaps were able to cope with precipitation, it failed to keep me dry when water came into the cockpit while broaching.

There has been a massive improvement in the whole of the Helly Hansen range this year and the Fjord jacket and trousers are no exception. With a range of improvements evident in both construction and design, they would make a good set of coastal oilskins, though a few improvements may be needed for them to reach offshore standard.
