The Very Best in Binoculars

Elsewhere in TheMainSail we have some thoughts on budget binoculars. Here at the other end of the spectrum we are looking through the Steiner range of pro-binos, manufactured in Germany and used by the US Navy and many American State Police departments.

These instruments are rugged! Totally waterproof, they are even hot water resistant. They use a nitrogen pressure system that renders condensation impossible - right through temperatures from - 40ºC to + 80ºC! The high definition optics give a crystal clear image even at low light levels.

The Steiner Commander V in 7x50 model: Weight is 2.5 pounds with a field of view of 130 m at 1,000 m range, a luminosity of 51.0 and a twilight factor of 18.7. Unbeatable, except by another Steiner!

I tested the Commander, Navigator and Skipper ranges at the Show. All three come with optional compasses which give a quick fix, and a field of vision of 130 m. I didn't actually drop a pair, but was assured that they do bounce and the word "indestructible" was used. The compass feature includes a fluid stabiliser, unlike the giro steadying devices used in other products which rely on magnetic fields and electronic control.

The Steiner concept is simple and not subject to what one of my friends calls "electronic green gunge". (Sounds moisty and I suppose is the result of battery failure and other distressing events.) The giro system is certainly clever but probably best suited to high vibration environments such as a helicopter where the movement is fast and harsh. Boats on the whole tend towards smooth, more modulated movement, up and down and wider in scope.

These optical instruments have been designed specifically for the marine market. First launched 25 years ago they are used by professions in which safety and reliability are paramount. In heavy seas, for example, low light abilities could be vital in rescuing a MOB situation.

OK these binoculars are not cheap, hovering around £600 including the built-in compass - the ones without a compass are £200 less. But these are special binoculars, the very next thing to bespoke. Why? The company is unique in specialising only in binoculars. Plus, the products are made in Germany with no out-sourcing to other countries.

If you want the best, take a look through these lenses, you won't find a better view. (See www.steiner.de)
