The Musto Carryall

Musto Carryall

The Musto Carryall is made from hard wearing waterproof PVC fabric. It is available in three sizes, small, medium and large, and comes in a variety of colours. You have the option of either a pair of carry handles or a detachable shoulder strap to transport it. The bag contains two storage areas; the main bag with a zip fastening and a front velcro pocket. It is also supplied with a storage case so it can be packed down to a smaller size and easily stowed away.

While sailing last weekend, I took a silver Musto 33.5 litre (medium) carryall with me to see how it would perform. I was really happy that all my clothes were kept dry, even when the bag was covered in water by a wave that came below deck. Though the zip isn't waterproof none of the water came through the fastening, but I am not sure if this would be the case if it was totally submerged. Water can get into the front pocket fairly easily so it is best not to keep items such as a mobile phone in there. However it is quite a good place to keep items that can cope with moisture, such as a bosun's knife, as they would be easily accessible.

In hindsight I wish I had purchased the larger 52.5 litre version of this bag as I found it a little too compact to fit in all my stuff for three days' sailing. Unfortunately the front velcro pocket was a bit of a let down as when the main body of the bag is filled, the flap covering the top of the pocket is unable to stretch down far enough to fasten properly, leaving any items in there open to the elements. Another thing I wasn't very impressed with was the shoulder strap as it had quite sharp nylon edges and was very uncomfortable to wear for long. It would have been better if Musto had included a little padding.

By far the best feature of the bag is the fact that it packs down into a smaller storage bag. This means it can be left on the boat in a very small compartment out of harm's way. It also makes it quite good for keeping at the bottom of a larger bag so you can decant some luggage if necessary.

Verdict

Retailing at only £20, it is hard to complain about any of the features of the medium Carryall as it is just so reasonably priced. It is made to the usual high quality that we have come to expect from Musto and is perfect for getting a day or two's sailing gear on to your yacht. However if you are going to have to carry your luggage a long way, I would suggest choosing something with a more substantial strap.

Roxy,

No great surprise that 35L wasn’t big enough, you are after all a women, not all but most women I’ve sailed with insist on bringing far too many clothes with them. Stick with the 35L sack as a control measure; if you can’t fit it in do you need it?
