Poorly porpoise pulls into portBy The MainSail | | |
Northney Marina on Hayling Island, Hampshire, played a central role in the rescue of the first porpoise saved in the area last week. After it was spotted 100 yards off the north coast, the coastguard and fire services along with Southern Marine Life began a rescue mission. A vet and two medics were also sent by the British Divers Marine Life Rescue organisation.
The porpoise was then transported to MDL-owned Northney Marina, and spent four hours swimming in the marina, regaining its strength. When it was deemed fit enough, the porpoise was re-released into the sea at the harbour entrance.
“We are proud to have been involved in the first rescue of this kind,” commented marina manager Mike Smith. “The coastguard and fire brigade did an excellent job and it was wonderful to see the porpoise being re-released.”
