Cathy's Blog: Better boots

Dubarry Goretex sailing boots

We have all bought things for our boats that maybe cost a lot of money and never quite lived up to expectations, and others that have proved so useful that you don't know how you ever managed without them, and you don't mind what they cost - they were worth it.

I'd definitely put my Dubarry Goretex sailing boots in the latter category.

I resisted getting a pair for a long time, amazed that anyone would spend the thick end of £150 (then, they're a bit more now!) on a pair of sea boots, but it came to the point where we, the owners, were the only members of our racing crew who hadn't got them! (Crew usually have better kit, as they don't blow the budget on new sails, running repairs, replacement winch handles, etc, etc).

So a couple of years ago husband and I bought each other a pair for Christmas (romantic, or what?) And yes, I now see the point.

I hated wearing cold, sweaty rubber wellies, and always put off putting them on until my socks were already soaked and my feet frozen. The Goretex boots in contrast are as comfortable as bedroom slippers, so there is no reason not to put them on in good time.

They not only keep you dry but also keep your feet nice and warm, even on the coldest, longest night passage, without the need for several pairs of ski socks inside. They're practical, too, with great grip, good protection to stop toes getting stubbed on deck hardware, and no laces to get caught on winches, cleats or clutches. Pricey, maybe, but worth every penny.

What have you found a blessing - or a complete waste of space - in your kitbag or on your boat? Please use the reviews section of TMS to share your experiences with the rest of us. You could save us all from making expensive mistakes - or have us all singing your praises for sharing an unexpected benefit.

I frequently sail single handed across the channel in winter and have also done a few longer solo hops such as from the Solent to the North of Ireland. Good boots makes all the difference on such passages and one of my best purchases has been a pair of Henri Lloyd Extreme Ocean Deck Boots. I have a good pair of HL traditional wellies - which are OK for launching the dingy, and a pair of QuaySide breathable boots which are rubbish  - they leak and have slippery soles. The Henri Lloyd Ocean boots however are fantastic - always super warm and dry, very comfy, good grip and easy to slip on and off. Great kit for sensitive tootsies.
