07/09/2005 - Sailor's Save Sea Birds
Sir David Attenborough, the World-renowned broadcaster and naturalist, is collaborating with the Volvo Ocean Race in a campaign to “Save the Albatross.”
Around 100,000 albatrosses a year drown when taking bait from hooks suspended on long fishing lines. As a result, 19 of the world's 21 species of albatross are now threatened with global extinction.
The money raised will help place trained people on longline fishing vessels to show the crews simple and practical techniques in hope of preventing it from continuously occurring fatality. Hanging streamers near fishing lines to scare birds away, weighting lines to make hooks sink more quickly and dyeing bait to make it less visible to seabirds, are all extremely simple, yet proven, techniques to avoid the needless slaughter of albatrosses.
The Volvo Ocean Race provides a worldwide platform to highlight this appalling issues of bird slaughter in hope of saving these magnificent birds. You can visit Ocean Watch to find out more information at www.volvoceanrace.org.
04/10/2005 - SailRocket Goes For Sailing Speed Record…
The SailRocket is back and heading for Weymouth Speed Week between the 8 to 14 of October in an attempt to become the fastest yacht on the planet. But it won't be easy when it has to compete against other 'boy racers' of the boat world, such as Comptech-Doyle soft rig.
On the 30 September, the SailRocket team had three practice blasts down the inshore speed sailing course, creating 100 feet of mist off the water achieving a best speed of 28.5 knots.
A new solid, machined moulded, wing sail is about to be added Weymouth Speed Week. The new sail will need to able to stand up to wind strengths of over 50 knots. Watch this space to find out if SailRocket reaches its goal!
