Gill has always offered a wide range of high quality marine clothing, and the Key West jacket and trousers are no exception. Using Gill's 3 Dot™ fabric technology, this 2 layer, fully lined range is lightweight, breathable and completely waterproof. The redesigned range for 2005-6 includes the new Performance Cut style, offering more freedom of movement and durability by incorporating articulated knees and a reinforced seat. Adjustable ankle cuffs also give a firmer fit around your boot. The jacket retails for around £150 and the trousers £120.
One of the best features of the Gill Key West set has got to be how comfortable it is. While working on a shift rota, it's very easy to bunk down while fully kitted up, which is a God-send when you may be called back on deck at any second. The material is very malleable from the moment you put it on, unlike many of its more ridged rivals, though this does mean you are far more aware of the weather conditions; strong winds and heavy precipitation in particular. The adjustable Velcro style cross backed braces mean that you can attain the desired fit without having plastic buckles digging into your shoulders, and like all the fastening, it's very easy to use, even with a gloved hand.
As you can imagine, sailing in February, I was adorned with plenty of layers which fitted snugly under the waterproofs, thanks to the semi-elasticated waist. The drop seat is certainly an interesting addition to the Key Wet trousers; while the bib is held up by the braces, you are can undo the side zips and expose your lower half with ease when you need to relieve yourself. Though I can appreciate this is useful as you don't even need to remove you jacket to go to the loo, it's no help however, when you are wearing an all-in-one mid-layer without this function. When I did use it, I found that you had to be careful that the flap at the back didn't dangle into the bowl, but after you had positioned yourself it was plain sailing!
The only real problem I noticed with this jacket was ventilation. Though the jacket is breathable and I was never left with any perspiration condensation on the inside, there is not enough air flow - so after a few hours you begin to get cold. By layering fabric, trapped air is warmed up by the heat of your body as you move. As air is a good insulator, it stops the cold outside your jacket getting in. The problem is that as you move, this air gets pushed around (i.e. when you sit down) and out of the clothes, so unless there is new air coming in, you are going to feel a chill. The only way get more air into this jacket is to take it off, which is the last thing you want to do in wet weather.

I think this is a fantastic set, as it is comfortable, light weight and hardly takes up any room in your luggage. At less than £300 for the set, the price is equally good, as you are getting top quality, taped seamed waterproofs for a bargain price. This would make a great summer set of oilskins, perfect from about May to September, but if you are looking for something that will see you through the winter months as well, it would be advised to go for something a bit more substantial… Well unless you can afford to buy one of each of course! |
