The weather since we launched our boat in February has been ideal for trying out thermals!
As CSR (part ofCrewsaver) says: “Wearing the right watersport gear is essential to your comfort. You want clothing that is durable, feels great next to your skin, and dries fast to keep you warm in cold temperatures.”
The new CSR Plamo thermal tops have been designed and manufactured to do just that -- with an eye specially on surfing, wakeboarding and kitesurfing enthusiasts, who want to look cool while keeping warm.
Stylish in black with an eye-catching logo, the close-fitting stretchy tops have been designed with wearing under a wetsuit in mind:
“The Plamo is constructed from very light 6oz fabric with an inner brushed polypropylene fleece and, when worn under a wetsuit, it creates an excellent thermal base layer system, which enhances the performance of your wetsuit,” says the company.
“The Plamo's fabric construction enables it to pull moisture away from your skin to keep it dry. The fabric then helps water spread evenly throughout the garment which in turn helps the water evaporate much quicker and will reduce wind chill.”
For the CSR Plamo range is also designed to be worn “on its own, with board shorts” - so why not with any other combination of watersports kit? What works under a wetsuit works equally well under foul weather yachting gear.
The new Plamo tops are indeed light, comfortable, keep you warm and wick moisture away from the body effectively. They are available in designs for both men and women, and sizes from child to XL and cost about £20.
The company says “the sleek ergonomic construction hugs your body for a great fit without bulk and offers high freedom of movement, even through your toughest activity.”
“Ergonomic” refers to the seamless underarm panels and high neck, designed for comfort under a wetsuit, which work just as well under yacht waterproofs. The four-way stretch fabric makes for a snug fit without restriction of movement and flat-locked seams prevent chafing.
CSR Plamo tops are available in long or short-sleeved versions, and the long-sleeved ones have thumb loops, to hold the sleeves in place while you add more layers. The tops are a good length, too.
My only reservation about the garment was the rather nylony feel of the fabric - not quite such a nice “handle” as some of the thermals more specifically aimed at the yachting market.

If you're not bothered about thermals looking cool, you'll probably keep the logo hidden under other layers anyway. The smooth underarms and high neck are a good idea whatever you wear on top. The CSR Plamo does the job and is sensibly priced.
