It is vital to have a car serviced on a
regular basis - and this requirement is no different
for equipment that can potentially save
your or your family's life at sea.
Ocean Safety aims to ensure that
customers understand the servicing of
life saving equipment, and the importance of
having it checked over annually.
Regular visual inspections can find
problems as they occur and if there is any
concern, the equipment should be taken for
professional advice immediately.
Liferafts must be serviced under manufacturer's
recommendations, normally every three years, although
they should be checked over at a service centre
annually to ensure that no serious damage has
been incurred over the season.
Epirbs should be tested regularly for battery life,
and fire extinguishers should be checked for
loss of pressure.
Lifejackets should be checked before use for corrosion,
an expired or leaky gas bottle and wear and tear.
Jonbuoy inflatable products must also be
checked regularly, to check that the firing mechanism is in order and that the gas bottle has
not leaked or corroded, says the company.
To demonstrate how to care for your life
saving appliances and regular servicing, Ocean
Safety is holding open days at two of their
branches,
There will be open days on Saturday and Sunday (February 16 and 17) at Southampton, and on Saturday March 1 in Plymouth.
