The JBL Black Box USB/MP3 audio system from Marine AV claims to be the first Digital Audio Player built specifically for boats - providing “incredible” sound quality without the inconvenience of CDs.
The player has an integral 1GB hard drive disk that can store up to the equivalent of 20CDs of music. Audio files can also be played, and downloaded, from a USB flash drive or from an iPod or MP3 player.
“You can keep your favourite albums on the Black Box's hard drive and take your latest downloads aboard in a handy iPod or USB flash drive,” explained managing director David Milner.
“Adding, swapping or deleting tracks is as easy as pressing a couple of buttons. Tracks from CDs can be copied via your home computer and transferred using a USB flash drive. The JBL Black Box offers the most convenient way of storing, transporting and listening to your favourite tracks while afloat.”
The box or 'brains' of the system is designed to be fitted out of sight in an area protected from the water. Operation is via a remote control - claimed to be watertight enough to withstand submersion.
JBL understands how hostile the marine environment can be to electronics. Unlike car audio systems, the Black Box comprises a rust-proof, splash-resistant housing with circuit boards encapsulated in a newly developed PUC moisture coating, which “dramatically” improves reliability.
The unit also includes an AM/FM tuner, for picking up weather forecasts and local and national radio channels. And for those who can't bear to part with their CDs, the Black Box also includes the software to control a CD changer.
With audio output of 180W (4 x 45W) and subwoofer output, the unit retails at £350 including VAT.
