The Crabber 22ft is a traditional looking boat and has many features of the larger yachts built by Cornish Crabbers, whilst being able to be towed behind a 4x4 vehicle. But she is a heavy boat and getting help from a boatyard or would make launching easier. A custom designed trailer is available as an extra.
Her 5ft bowsprit can be lifted to save money in Marinas or if you prefer by removing the bolt, run in along the deck. If you decide on a lift the bobstay needs to be adjusted, a spare halyard attached and you can then lift the spar.
The shrouds are in line with the heel bolt so they help support the spar laterally and can be used as a lever to raise or lower the mast. This could be a real bonus when faced with low bridges or preparing to make the boat ready for the trailer. The hollow mast (reducing the weight) is in wood and stepped in a stainless-steel tabernacle. The rigging is fairly basic with a forestay but no backstay and single shrouds on each side. There are no spreaders. She comes without guardrails which add to her working boat feel or even a push or pulpit. But I can't help feeling that safety might be served if they were fitted. Even at the cost of slightly invading her traditional looks.
Her high peaked gaff cutter rig suits the short coachhouse and the circular fixed portlights add to the traditional look. Her raised decks provide comfortable sitting headroom and a good feeling of space below. She comfortably sleeps four. The forecabin with a pair of vee berths is divided from the saloon by a solid door in the main bulkhead. There is provision for a private toilet space mounted between them. There are storage bins below the berths. She also has a forehatch and vent in the deckhead. The saloon is dominated by the centreplate case with a solid double flap cabin table mounted on top. Wide berths run along both sides with stowage beneath them. The cabin also has a well-equipped galley. The raised coach roof allows more headroom and provides extra light. She can be supplied in a traditional varnished interior or a woodwashed and painted finish.
The ingenious centreboard is designed to be raised or lowered single-handed. She has a powerful 1GM 10 inboard engine which delivers 9hp.
