TheMainSail says: Howard and Mary Williams spent summer 2006 cruising anticlockwise round southern Britain in their Moody 31 Megstone. Full details of that voyage can be found at www.peartree-house.co.uk/sailing
This summer they set off to complete their exploration of the British Isles, cruising anti-clockwise round Scotland. They have published another excellent account of their travels at www.peartree-house.co.uk/sailing2
Anyone planning an extended British cruise will find lots of valuable information in these
extremely interesting, detailed and well illustrated blogs, which cover everything from passage planning to lessons learned and costs incurred.
And if you are not yet planning an extended cruise, reading their stories of idyllic anchorages and helpful harbourmasters will probably inspire you to start thinking about it now!
Even the dismal weather experienced this summer, particularly on the east coast, does not seem to have put them off, although they have now decided to base their boat in the warmer and sunnier west!
They say one of their mistakes this year was not going out to the Western Isles: “We were so close, the weather always looked so much better there and we should have gone. Of course, if we'd done it then there would be nowhere new to go next year!”
So it looks as if next year we can look forward to more another installment!
One of the many interesting items in this year's log is a table comparing the costs of their two summer voyages. In Scotland they spent more nights at anchor and fewer in marinas than they had in England - partly because there are fewer marinas to choose from.
But even comparing like for like, charges in Scotland were lower than the year before in England, and so this summer's voyage was considerably less expensive than the previous year's.
Thank you Howard and Mary for once again sharing your experiences and advice with TheMainSail.
