A new English language marine weather forecast service has been launched for a number of popular European sailing areas.
Metmarine offers free forecasts on its website. It will also deliver forecasts on request to mobile phones - for a charge.
“You don't need to sign up or register and you can use any phone, contract or pay-as-you-go,” says the company. “Twenty four hours a day you should have the latest forecast in a couple of minutes.
“Our forecasts usually consist of three text messages and are charged at £1 per text. The total cost of the forecast won't exceed £3 and this will appear on your mobile phone bill. “These costs are the same no matter where in the world you receive your forecast.”
Areas covered include the English and French Channel coasts, French Mediterranean and French Atlantic coasts, the Spanish Mediterranean, Greece and Turkey.
Metmarine has forecasts for the whole world and more sea areas will be added in due course, says founder Paul Herbert.
“We in Metmarine are passionate about boats and the safety of the sport, allied to the best solutions that technology can offer,” he said. We often find we cannot get a local detailed inshore or offshore forecast in English when sailing overseas and equally rare, detailed free outlooks for the English Channel.
“This was the reason for creating the service - to provide forecasts for fellow enthusiasts.
Based on tests we have made covering our accuracy since 2004, the forecasts have won much acclaim from users.”
There are eight separate forecast areas along the South Coast from Lands End to the Dover Straits, the only UK waters the service coveres, so far.
The forecasts include:
- Wind speed, trend sand direction
- Barometric pressure
- Visibility
- Local weather
- Sea and air temperature
- Forecast for today with a 24 hour outlook, updated every six hours
