When it comes to tools for use a board a yacht, sometimes it is the simplest devices that are the most useful. Unlike many knives with numerous functions, the Captain Currey Bosun Knife has been specifically designed for the task in hand.
Designed by Captain Charles Currey over 50 years ago, this steel yachtsman's knife has a spike on one side, suitable for unpicking tight knots and the like, and on the other a 60mm blade with a serrated edge. Both have locking mechanisms to avoid trapping the user's fingers. There is also a shackle key in the centre of the tool.
Easily manipulated with a heavily gloved hand, the Bosun Knife comes equipped with lanyard for security, as well as instructions for use, oiling and sharpening. I found the ergonomic shape easy and comfortable to use. It could easily be operated by one hand, and thanks to the lanyard; it was always easily accessible.
The knife has been dropped, left in water for lengths of time and used vigorously in some situations. Five years on, with only a sharpening and an oil by way of maintenance, the knife is still going strong without showing any signs of wear. Costing £24, it won't break the bank either.

The Captain Currey Bosun Knife is one of those little gems that will come out every season and prove just as useful as the last. Every yacht should have one. Just be careful not to get the spike out once your liferaft has been deployed!
