Would it be your Skippers Choice?

Skippers Choice stand at London Boat Show Due to the nature of sailing, spills are difficult to avoid and can cause stains throughout your yacht. Not only are dirty blemishes unsightly, but they can also decrease the value of your vessel when it comes to selling it.

Fortunately there are a range of 'wonder' products on the market which claim they can remove pretty much any kind of muck for you, and let's face it, buying a cleaning product is a darn sight cheaper than buying reupholstering fabric.

One such product caught my eye at the London Boat Show this week. Skippers Choice (Stand N288) is a wax-like multi-purpose cleaner which can be mixed with water to form a range of different strength solutions for various cleaning purposes.

Allegedly able to tackle a whole range of maritime grime, you can use Skippers Choice on pretty much anything on board (including bilges, fibreglass, tiles and grout, marble, shower curtains, porcelain, anti-fog windows, mirrors, plexiglass, all types of decks including teak, RIBs and even fenders).

So of course something that can do all of that is going to have all types of bleach and solvents in it? Well, actually it doesn't. Skippers Choice doesn't leave any harmful residue or nasty fumes and it is said to be totally bio-degradable and harmless to the environment. The enzyme-based natural emulsifier made from algae is in fact so harmless they say you can apply it with your bare hands.

Now I know this may all sound a little too good to be true, and I was a little sceptical at first, but the demonstration was very persuasive. Below is a pictorial record of how well Skippers Choice works on fabric stains:

  1. Start off with a clean piece of fabric

Retailing at £12.50 for 1 Litre or 2.9 Litres for £25 including p&p, it won't break the bank to have a tub on board ready to get rid of any dirt and grime that comes with sailing.

woodcare.co.uk will sell you some oxalic acid crystals (rhubarb juice) which when diluted in water and rinsed all over everything, will do the same job, quicker and cheaper
