All racing sailors want faster sail setting and more resilient sailcloth. The latest nano technology product from Holmenkol, Seal'n'Glide, promises “an ultimate performance finish for when seconds really count” - so it would make an ideal gift for keen racers.

Seal'n'Glide significantly reduces the friction on sail surfaces, resulting in faster sail setting, say the makers, who claim the product also prevents sails from snagging on rigs or fittings, increases cloth stability, increases tear strength and is resistant to sail washing detergents. Added competitive advantages come from non stick tell-tales, and used on bolt ropes, Seal'n'Glide makes for easy hoists, they add.

Seal'n'Glide can be used on mainsails, headsails and spinnakers - and on any other material that requires reduced friction and water and dirt repellency like spinnaker socks and spinnaker bags. The product, which retails at £28.13 (RRP inc VAT), also provides fungicidal and UV protection, they say.

Holmenkol coatings are made up of tiny (nano) particles which bond to the surface they are applied to. During application, the particles organise themselves in layers. The multi-layered structure means that the coating resists abrasion, because if one layer is damaged, a deeper layer is exposed and acts as a protection to the rest, it is claimed.

Holmenkol is the oldest ski wax manufacturer in the world and has been at the forefront of research and development of high tech coatings for the ski market. These high performance nano coatings can be applied to many other sports and are now available for the marine market from distributor Contender UK. The range of Holmenkol products will be on sailmakers' and retailers' stands throughout the London Boat Show.
