Sailing is one of the few sports where men and women can compete on equal terms, and there are more women than ever on the water. At Skandia Cowes Week this year about a third of the 8,000 competitors were female and the event incorporated a Ladies Day for the first time.
But until recently, female sailors had no choice but to wear gear designed for men. Henri Lloyd's new TP2 Women's Phantom Jacket, is one of the first technical offshore jackets produced specifically for women, rather than adapted from the men's version.
With a flattering, tapered waist, the design also incorporates internal back, waist and hem adjusters, to ensure a comfortable fit, and pockets repositioned to add to the streamlined look, the jacket has been ergonomically cut “and everything that doesn't need to be there isn't,” say the manufacturers.
The TP2 Women's Phantom Jacket received a special mention at the 2006 Dame design awards at METS.
Men needn't feel left out because there is a male version too. Both use Henri Lloyd's new TP2 Alpha fabric, created to provide a high level of protection, as well as being waterproof, breathable, and above all lightweight. It requires no lining, which makes it even lighter, and so makes it especially suitable for women, says Henri Lloyd.
