Jurassic Coast Expedition

This was a brilliant trip from Bowleaze Cove, Weymouth Bay to Lulworth Cove and return from September 15th to 17th with almost perfect weather, slight winds to start with, a 40-knotter on the Friday afternoon and into the evening, a bit of cloud and rain and even some mist.

The cross section of weather gave the paddlers a rounded perspective of sea kayaking and it was warm and pleasant paddling over the entire trip.

The fishing made for a great time too with two large sea bass and three mackerel caught on the first four-mile leg of the trip alone. You just cannot beat fresh fish on an open fire on the beach with a good bottle of white wine.

A selection of cod, mullet and other small breeding fish were caught and returned to the water but made for exciting paddling, if not rather slow at times due to the paddlers fighting fish.

Campsites were good with well protected coves and shelter. The downside was a steep shelving shingle beach which made for tricky landings.

With some careful observation though and counting the sets, we managed to land perfectly without a single mishap. With the group helping their respective 'boat buddies' to land, the whole exercise was made simple for the trip leaders.

We managed a steady two-knot pace and this included the fishing. Our overall average pace for the trip was a respectable four knots (we obviously focused our minds when we weren't fishing!).

We did some sight seeing around the local reefs, wrecks and rock gardens. Stair Hole at Lulworth Cove was particularly beautiful and highly recommended for snorkeling and kayaking.

A fantastic trip was had by all with clean, clear water (although a little cold), plenty of fresh fish and good weather. A word of warning: don't park at the Oasis Cafe at Bowleaze Cove, Weymouth Bay. The chap there hands out tickets without discussion.

Other than this one person, the trip was great and highly recommended.

With half the annual 3500 RNLI call outs to leisure craft being engine related, engine maintenance is of major importance, and there really is no excuse for not carrying out some basic daily checks.
