Weather station could be ideal Christmas gift

Wall weather station
Wall weather station, £60

All sailors are obsessed by the weather. In our house we follow the shipping forecast like a religion, even in mid week when we aren't even going near the boat, never mind going sailing. So it's a fair bet that one Christmas present idea sure to suit the average yachtsman is one of those electronic weather stations that allows you to follow weather trends at home, or even in the office.

Perhaps not surprisingly, the RNLI Christmas gift catalogue has a range of such devices, to suit a variety of budgets. The Science Museum Wall Weather Station, for £60, forecasts the weather and keeps track of tides and temperature, barometric pressure, humidity level - and includes calendar, clock, alarm, and even the days of the week in seven languages. It comes complete with the necessary batteries and remote outdoor sensor.

Wireless weather station

Or for the diehard enthusiast “the last word in home weather stations” from Oregon comes with six outdoor, solar powered wireless sensors relaying all the information accessed on the touch-screen indoor unit.

This shows temperature and humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind speed and direction and rainfall. And there's an integral atomic clock with alarm and a basic forecast display in symbol form - “so when someone says: 'turned out nice again' you can tell them why.”

Mechanical weather forecaster
Mechanical weather forecaster, £35

This wireless weather station costs £299, but would surely be very gratefully received. If, on the other hand, you're buying for someone allergic to electronics, there's wonderful mechanical weather forecaster for a mere £35.

This comes from the days of the Victorians - gadget mad long before electronics were dreamed of. It uses barometric trends and wind direction to give “a simple but remarkably accurate” weather forecast for the UK.

These and lots more Christmas gift ideas, mostly with a nautical theme, can be found at www.rnlishop.org.uk
