Sticking glass to aluminium

I have recently shattered the hinged window of my cockpit (Bavaria 38 Ocean CC). I’m left with an aluminium piano like hinge flapping in the wind and a separate aluminium frame which fits like a bezel around the glass. The frame was not attached to the hinge. Can someone please advise of a suitable adhesive that will join glass and aluminium to form a really strong bond, since the frame only provides a protective edge for the glass – it does not provide any support for the glass. The bond between the hinge and the glass has to be equivalent to some form of mechanical fixing like bolts. I have trawled 3Ms website to no avail and have even resorted asking Bavaria, but as usual all I get is a stony silence.

I personally would go to a good plastics supplier and replace the glass with perspex, that way you can stick it and mechanically have the hinge bolted on.

If you want to stick with glass (excuse the pun) I d suggest the best bet is Silkaflex - comes in various types - most chandlers stock it.

Wolfie,

Thanks for your advise. I already have the replacement glass so I'm stuck with my options. I'll head down to the local chandlery.

Thanks again.

Hi Robin

It may be worth trying a car windscreen specialist. Many windscreens seem to be "bonded in" these days.

Not supprised you are getting stoney silence from Bavaria; Your hinged window sounds like a pretty poor design to me. Is it possible to change the whole assembly for a properly made hatch?

Chas,

Good idea. Thanks for that, I'll visit my local specialist.

I've decided that based on the cost of the replacemnt glass from Bavaria it would be more economic to buy a brand spanking new boat!

Try Hafixs super glue, it's a Cyanoacrylate but resin based, allows movement prior to sticking and appears to stick anything to anything. ( but not to skin).I saw it demonstrated at the Southampton Boat show and was very impressed. The salesman stuck neoprene circular seals  together, one drop on the 5mm dia cut end and two of us, at 16 and 18 stone respectively, could not pull the joint apart, although the seal stretched to about 1 foot long. Polythene to polythene, again stretched to breaking point but did not break, galvanised steel to ditto, ceramic to ceramic. My pal and I both bought a 50cc bottle at about £10.00 and it is kept in the fridge. see www.hafixs.co.uk

Thank you to you all for your suggestions and advice. All roads led to a Sikaflex product 265 which has done the job perfectly. I eventually ended up talking to a Company called Marine & Industrial http://www.marineindustrial.co.uk/ who were absolutley briliant. They spent a lot of time advising me on the right product, but also provided tips and tricks that you wouldn't normally know about. They are to be highly recommended.
