Prop' choice

Further to my post a couple of months ago "A bit more go" I have reached another point where input from forum members would be appreciated once more.

I have been dissapointed with only getting about 3.6Kn out of my Hunter Horizon 26 under power in flat water and a slow acceleration when power is called upon. Over the weekend I have taken tacho' readings simultaneously from the crank pulley & gearbox output shaft & found that no clutch slip is occuring under load & that the engine is happily revving out to 3600rpm whilst making way; this is what the max continuose revs should be from Yanmar specs I have found on the web; it will rev to 3875rpm in neutral.

The conclusion from this is that my prop would seem to be the problem & this is where I want some help. Which prop do I go for? My priority is to sail my boat, but I want to know the thrust is there when called for & when mauoevering in the marina ( I usually have to start my exits astern) According to information read, a feathering prop would not perform with the horsepower my Yanmar 1GM10 can offer, so presumably another 2 blade fixed or a folding prop would be the choice on offer. I have seen conflicting opinions on folding props performance, especially astern. Can anybody offer their opinions who have been through this situation?

Is your prop left or right handed, plus what size is the shaft, I have a virtually new (but now redundant as I fitted a Saildrive) folding prop in my garage, if it is the right rotation I would be prepared to let you try it it, its a 15 x 10 for a 1 inch shaft.

Regarding folding vs fixed, if you were at Cowes week or saw any of it on TV, you will see all of the racing boats manouvering around the harbour/marinas with absolutely no problem and going astern in much more controlled ways than any powerboard, and they all have folding props.

A fixed prop is like dragging a bucket behind you!

Hi Dave

Thanks for your kind offer, my prop is right handed but I only have a 22mm shaft!! This is a shame as Hunter have told me a 15 x 10 was originally fitted.

Hi Steve, I can only echo/reinforce what David has said. Our original boat had a two-bladed fixed prop and we were astonished at the difference it made when we fitted a folding one. We expected her to sail much better, which she did, but we were surprised to find that she motored more efficiently as well. As David says, there is no need to be worried about a folding prop affecting manouvrability. Thousands of racing boats have them, with no significant problem.

Just had a look and a measure the shaft is actually 22mm, but its left handed I'm afraid
