High-thrust prop

I just bought a new prob for my Evinrude outboard. It's a high thrust jobbie, but there seems to be a slight problem in that that 'hub' diameter of the prop is bigger that the engine gearbox itself. Basically the prop doesn't work even through Evinrude said it would work fine- my husband said it was something to do with there not being enough forward thrust to gain against the tide. Should the prop fit inside the gearbox housing tightly? I have lots of reverse power but so little to go forwards, whcih is the whole point!

Any ideas?

On my engine the high thrust prop slides back and forth by about half an inch- does yours do this? Maybe the 'sliding' mechanism is stuck in the reverse position?

Also, if the hub is 1" larger, the blades will probably be shorter than you'd think- reducing thrust?

Good luck fixing it!

perhaps you need to check the thrust washer is ok and i would have thought that if the hub is larger diameter than the gearbox that it is not the right prop. also the engine will only be able to develop full power if the pitch and diameter of the prop are correct for the motor.

Yeah I think that's a really good suggestion- sounds like Evinrude need a bit of a ticking off! Where did you purchase the high thrust prop- did you do it with Evinrude's recommendation?

Not having had any experience with this problem I can only suggest you get a second - or third opinion after making sure that everything that should move freely does move freely. Best if luck!

I don't know too much about this either, I've never had any need for 'high thrust'- I tend to potter...but complain to Evinrude, I've always heard that they were one of the more reliable members of the engine family?

I have purchaced a high thrust prop for my 9.9 evinrude from steel develpoments london it fitted ok and gave me good reverse thrust which did not exist b4 and good forward push can get through Portsmouth harbour entrance against a spring tide now!
