Hi Pete

Have a look at Ofcom's

Ship Radio Licence Information Sheet

http://www.ofcom.org.uk/static/archive/ra/publication/ra_info/ra364.htm

This provides info about getting a licence for the radio itself, and also an operator's licence. You need both!

The RYA does training courses for the exam you need for the operator's licence. (The exam is included in the course.)

Hope that helps.

Last w/e I listened to a mayday situation where the panicky skipper was unintelligible on his radio. He'd forgotten all his training. Twice, Coastguard said' 'Say again, please speak slowly'. Then, 'Did you say you were taking water?' etc.

It seemed to me that the skipper had 'the safety gear', but had not practiced it's operation.

Yes, you often hear people on the radio who haven't bothered to do the training, and have no idea of proper procedure. Apart from the fact that it is against the law to operate a radio without a licence, the tiny saving involved in not getting one could prove an extremely false economy if you ever needed to use the radio in a real emergency.

I was recently appalled to hear a sailing wife say, almost proudly, that she had absolutely no idea how to use the radio, as she always leaves it to him! What happens if he goes over the side, or has a heart attack, and she needs to call for help?

There's no telling whether any of us would keep a cool head, or panic, in a real emergency, but having practised Maydays must help. It's also a good idea to have a note of the boat's name spelt phonetically, its call sign and MMSI number on permanent display by the VHF.

Hi Pete,

there are many RYA training centres and yacht clubs around the country and they will probably know when the next centres near you are offering a radio course. Often all done on one day.

Very important for the safety of you and your crew that you do the course, regardless of the law!

May I also suggest whislt you wait to get on a course that you get a DVD tutor and a booklet on the Radio course and get to know the theory backwards before the day, as the course itself is very intensive..

best of luck , Scotty.
