Do AIS transponders have to be registered with any authorities or does the owner input whatever vessel details that he/she pleases? If so, I  assume that as transponders get more popular, receivers could get very cluttered with dubious information.

It should be listed on your radio licence details I believe... Class A AIS would be a radio transmitter. And there certainly is the option of adding it on the licence change form.

Thanks - must check, but I don't think this option is on Irish licences

Ah - not sure about Ireland... who issues your radio licences?

The Marine Radio Unit part of the Irish Department of Transport - we have recently begun to copy the British licence scheme €100 for a 'lifetime' licence (used to be about €2)

Oh Gawd! Zillions of Euros!

I'd hoped that they'd be happy with my SSR number when I buy my AIS.

Oh well, if I look at it as saving £00s then it's not so bad.

ALL AIS transmitters must have a valid MMSI programmed into them - this is exactly the same number that you have in your DSC/VHF radio. I'm in the Uk, so filled in the "change notification" section of my licence and got the AIS kit added at no-charge.

Don't forget if you register your licence online - it's free for ever now (!!!) - just need to confirm your details every 10 years I think.
