I know that one can purchase ridiculously expensive coatings to prevent marine growth on propellers, but these tend to be only partly successful in their intended purpose.

Has anyone tried any other solution to the problem - such as applying heavy grease for example - that has been reasonably successful?

Sorry, Phil, can't help you on this one. We don't put anything on our prop. Just polish it clean every time we see it (the boat is usually out of the water a couple of times during the season.) Nobody seems to be giving a great testimonial to any of the "ridiculously expensive coatings." And I don't think grease stays on very long!

Same here, the prop is polished with Brasso until it gleams, seems to do the trick, for the West coast anyway.
