Having beefed for years about rotten workmanship, overpriced repairs, shoddy treatment etc etc etc.

I thought I should heap some praise on a company that really do know what they are doing, do a brilliant on-time job, are easy and pleasant to deal with, offer complete no-quibble guarrantees and and are ludicrously cheap!

Auto Unit of Dunstan Gate, Paxton Road, Gorse Lane Instrial Estate, Clacton-on-Sea, CO15 4LR 01255 433363.

This is a small business, but by god do they know what they are doing.

Any problem with a starter motor or alternator or any small electrical motor, talk to them.

I had my Volvo 2020 stater motor rebuilt by them a year ago (A Volvo Fitter burnt it out by continually cranking an engine that wouldn't start!) It was a horrible burnt thing, all the windings, comutator, brushes etc completely dissolved by heat, the casing blackened.

2 days later it came back looking like new repainted with a 12 month warranty. Cost under £40, price of a new Volvo Motor - nearly £300.

Several friends with both ancient and modern starter motors and alternators (plus the odd dynamo/dynastart) some just knackered, some drowned, some burnt out, have used this company, they all come back looking like new for a fraction of the price of a new one. They have even been known to do a quick fix to an small elecrtical item & not charge at all.

Out local YC has a rescue boat with a big Honda 4 stroke outboard, we've had continual problems with the Bendix on its starter motor, they fixed it (a new spring & a bit of magic) no charge.

So any problems use this outfit!

They do exist-remember many years ago a similar firm specialising in electrical rewinds who reconned  a magneto for me. My local car engine and gearbox reconner was quite happy several years ago to help strip and rebuild a hurth gearbox-although unfamiliar with marine gearboxes he had the hydraulic press needed to remove and reassemble gears onto shaft-we went into workshop and he worked the press whilst I gave directions as to what was needed.

You notice they don't have the word "marine" in their company name!

Absolutely, I am begging to think that the word "marine" in a business name is actually an oxymoron!

thanks for that info david on the startermotor, alternator guys in Clacton. I'm in the throws of rebuilding my kitcar and they both need a birthday, I'll give them a try..Scotty

I've one of these in many bits.. I first built it some 18 years ago and now No.1 son wants it.

Scotty

Absolutely love the car! It has a bit of Maserati 250F look about the Radiator (mouth) and a bit of original Healey look to the whole car (not the Austin Healey but the one with the big Riley dohc lump).

If you have yet to fit/find a diff, maybe an XJS V12 one with a limited slip might work?

You're obviously a man of many talents Scotty.

Can't see how you can have let this little beauty fall into dis repair, perhaps you have spent too much time on the boat!
