I have a NASA Navtex.  Is there a similar cheapish screen set up, other than by going on line with a computer, that I can buy to see synoptic charts similar to going on to BBC weather or Bracknell weather sites?

Not that I'm aware of, Scotty - but if there is, I'd love to have one! For a long time the Met Office tried to charge web users for looking at their synoptic charts, but fortunately they became available free from so many third parties that in the end the Met Office gave in and at least they are now readily available from their website via computer.

Sorry, don't know of any. But if you go online to www.grib.us you can download 7 days of synoptic charts (and the display software) and look at it at leisure on board. It's free, easy to use and friendly.

Many thanks for that Ralph I'll take a look at that site.   I do a similar thing occassionally on the BBC and Bracknell weather sites.

It's just that recently I wanted some long range (3 -6 day) info' and had to lose a days sailing due to the country that I was in, closed down on a Sunday and so the internet cafes was closed.  We asked around the various boats in the harbour and even in hotels but were unable to get a synoptic chart update.  I suppose it comes down to the fact that if I want this info' I will have to do what Cathy talks about, and get a laptop and go online etc.

I'm fairly inexperienced in trying to get this info, and am not an instrument/computer boffin, but I'm surprised there isn't an advanced set up, possibly related to Navtex that would give me visuals or a print out of a weeks synoptic charts etc.

I've just followed the link supplied by Ralph and although it doesn't solve Scotty's problem, I must admit the free grib viewer and files are great! Once registered, you can download files whenever you like which are displayed on a very user-friendly viewer which is easy to use. I recently trialed the Movingweather software but found it a bit 'clunky' and I much prefer this (and it's free!). Thanks.
