Getting the most from your radar
It's important to understand tuning controls, even if you leave them on automatic

"Navigational echoes may be large, small, bright or faint - and it is important to remember that this does not necessarily relate to the size of the object."

Too right! I shall never forget visually tracking a large gas tanker coming towards me off the coast of South East Spain, with no discernable radar signature. It was only when it passed along our Port side that the radar picked it up - with a vengance! The screen went almost completely green.

To this day, can't work out why nothing was registering as it approached us.

I remeber many years ago when I was working as Skipper of a small fishing trawler - (my first command job) of working close in shore in dense fog... it was in the days of the old green screen radars with the rubber daylight viewing hood!

The work load was fairly high and the time and I happened to glance at the screen to see a blip come onto the screen and head for the centre of the display rather quickly. I quickly worked out the blip's speed at 120mph! Sort of resigned myself to the imminent collsion (we rarely used higher than the 6 mile range) as I knew there was no chance of manouvering out of the way as we were buzzed by the MAFF fisheries aircraft flying above the fog!

They did apologise via VHF for scaring the proverbial out of me thou!

Yes, fortunately someone had warned us about helicopters before that happened to us! I think it was the famous India Juliet...

Yep had them a few times too in the Solent - but had always been able to see them!

Worth noting that the new CG helicopters are fitted with AIS too - not sure how they show on the display but that'd look like someone had shot an arrow at you!

This interesting article  has prompted me to write and concur that this is a most useful, and often disregarded, piece of equipment that will continue to function as long as it is provided with power. GPS, however, is very dependant on satellites and the whims of those that control them. It is not inconceivable that some clown could inadvertently shut the gps down which would no doubt leave 90% of merchant ships and yachts somewhat confused!I find the number of yachts putting to sea relying totally on electronic charts etc. to be absolutely incredible.  Radar, of course, is not dependent on third party influence but is dependent on the skill and experience of the operator. I believe far more emphasis and encouragement should be given to the use of those aids that are not dependent on third party information and in particular to navigation that is not dependent on a power source either.
