We bought a cheap (£50) pair of binoculars for our boat which although worked very well were dropped once and one of the front lense holders sheared off at the body. On examination the plastic they were made of was extremely thin and the break was at the threads. Maybe they wern't so cheap after all!!

For similar price I bought Steiner 10x26 binos ... excellent quality, small, light and fit pocket. 10yr g'tee ..............

No competition methinks .......

(I still have my cheap Zenith 8x50's I bought when an Officer in Merchant Navy - about $50 in Singapore about 25yrs ago .... one lens is slightly bloomed and the focusing bar that carries the two front lenses is slightly loose ... but still work !)

I have had my Canon 10x30is "stabilized" binos for a few years now and I still love them. They are a bit bulky and heavy for their 10x30 spec and battery life is not wonderful (I now use Uniross "Hybrio" rechargeables which help) but the stabilised image clarity has to be seen to be believed, especially in poor light when you wouldn't expect bright images from 30mm objective lenses. They do suffer from a restricted field of view compared to 7x50 so I would have a pair those on board as well. I also have a pair of the smaller Canon 8x25is but they are not as good as the 10x30is.

The thing about binos is that the 7X 50, 8 X 40 or whatever is only half the story.

The magnification and field of vision are important of course but so is the actual physical size of the outer lense, the bigger the better as they capture more light and of course give better sharper viewing and are much better in poor light conditions.

When I was a sea, one of my skippers had a pair of Zeiss binos that he had taken from a U-Boat Captain during the war (& yes he had sunk it as an RNR Commander). They were huge at least twice the size of any other pair I've ever seen. The clarity and the way one could even use them at night was amazing.

So if buying binos look for the largest outer lense you can find, they may be bulkier, but then you are not going to be taking them to the opera are you!

For use on a boat, the weight of the binos is important as well, the heavier the better, if they are too light then they are veryy difficult to keep steady and aimed on a target as the boat bobbles around. Heavier = more inertia = easier to keep steady!
