The Star class is an ancient and weired boat and was dropped from the Olympics before, I understand that it was brought back because it takes a truly olympic athlete to sail it (which may be true when you look at the size of the rig and the extremes they have to go to to hike the brute). Of course it was probably brought back because it was the only american design in the game!

In the same vein as Davids blog, how can any Olympic sport produce one athlete that can win 6 or 8 gold medals in the same Olympics?  How rediculous is that?  Something is surely wrong?

If it wasn't for the ease and speed by which swimming races can be reeled off in quick successsion and produce a relatively easy to film, armchair friendly activity, then I suppose it wouldn't be allowed to exist in the form it does.

The opposite to this has happened in rowing.  Not the most viewer friendly sport at times. Regattas at World and Olympic level were taking so long to get through the race timetable that events such as the coxed pairs were thrown out. Remember the Olympic Gold medal won by GB in coxed pairs..... the little cox suddenly emmerging from the bow of the boat and jumping up and down within the boat in excitement?

It has been a fantastic achievement by many of GB's Olympians this year especially in those sports that seem to have got their act together and have been organised and funded well from the grass roots up for several years in the past .
