Clutch Replacement
Is it worth it?

I want (need) to replace the clutch plates (not cone) on my MS10L-A gearbox which is mounted on a Penta 2030 engine. Having rung around, I have had 3 options offered.

1. One dealer saying the safest & most viable option is to buy a new gearbox & have the warranty.

2.  Another dealer who has said there is no problem fitting an overhaul kit, but with the labour to overhaul only added it comes to nearly 80% of a new box cost.

3. Another saying fitting the overhaul kit is no problem to a mechanically minded person, so I need to just purchase the kit which saves over £1k

Are these things a viable DIY fix? Do I really need a new box just because the clutch is worn?

Hi Steve

Option 3 unless you are very rich in which case option 1.

Have you got the manual?

If it doesn't require expensive specialist tools (although these can often be hired) many things are viable to fix.

Once you've stripped it down and fixed it, you'll have a much better understanding of the device and how it works. That can only improve your confidence at sea because there aren't many mechanics to call on 10 miles out.

Cheers

Hi Chas

Option 3 sounded the best to me, but the others put doubt in my mind.

I have been assured that no special tools are required, but have hit a brick wall when trying to source manuals or drawings for gearboxes. Engines are no problem! Do you know where I can get the info?

You might try below link-they have various manuals listed under Volvo Penta-some appear to refer to gearboxes as well as engines-also if not see if they can source one for you.

I got my Mercedes OM636 manual from them-US based but still very good value for money.

Having said this gearboxes become quite clear in their workings as you strip them

A marine gearbox of that type is a very simple thing- pull it apart! If you've taken down a few engines you'll have no problems.
