Some great stuff there Scotty, sometimes you have to remind yourself why you do it and then you see another bit and wish you'd been there.

Do not know whether latest series of Trawlermen is showing outwith Scotland but in last weeks episode we see a trawler skipper casually pointing his boat into the teeth of a north Atlantic storm force 11 which lasts several days and battening down!-just to get us our fish and chips!-and 22 year old skipper  of a shrimper out in the north sea walking up the side of the mess deck as boat rolls!!

Yep,  those and the Alaskan crabbers have been shown down the hill here in the South East Phil. Great programmes. My wife nearly had to go for her seasickness patches last week whilst watching.

I love Trawlermen. It is the only "reality TV" that I watch. I too was particularly impressed by the young skipper's "ballerina" act in the galley!

The first Trawlermen series is being re-run on Sky at the moment...

Brings back memories - some good and some bad. We never regularly worked in the conditions those Scotsmen do thou. Can remember trying to cook roast dinners in some pretty horrendous weather conditions but never danced up the galley walls!

Once remember being on a cross chanel ferry queing to get into Dover which I believe had retracted its stabalisers-remember being thrown against the plate glass that seperated the corridor to the only deck area at the stern open to passengers from dining area-the whole inside was open plan plate glass but totally claustraphobic.

Dont get seasick but didnt like the boat one little bit!particularly as they opened the bow door with my Metro right at the front -before they got up to the ramp-felt like we were going into the beach on D Day.

If it sounds familiar yes not suprisingly  it turned upside down the next year!

If its the same boat I had a friend who was lost that day Ironically I met him on my first sea survival course...

I also had a similar trip to Dover on P & O from Zeebrugge. Again another friend on the crew had enabled most of the rough trip (rough judged by the difficulty in making tea) to be spent on the bridge where it was extremely uncomfortable. We spent an additional 4 hours dodging off Dover as it was too rough to get in. During the 'rounds' it was noticable less dramatic on the passenger decks but I did wonder what might have gone thourgh the passenger heads had they been given the same view of the weather that I had!

As far as I am aware it was the Herald of Free Enterprise-eveyone was throwing up everywhere and just never forget the plate glass wall next to Cafeteria-not only did I get thrown against the wall the ceiling was close emough to put my hand up agaist it and it was one of those days when you waited for the boat to get to the bottom of a wave and then get a free lift up the staircase.

But as I have mentioned elsewhere my dad always told the story of his experience on the American troop ship-The Mauritania(the Lusitanias sister ship)-crossing to Iceland. As well as enjoying American rationed(-steaks and pork chops and as much as he wanted because eveyone else was being seasick)He managed to find a way unofficially onto deck and never forgot the north atlatic waves rolling in above funnel height-so 60 plus footers.
