the picture dosent do it justice, we were pushed into crinan at 12 kts with the corryvrekken roaring behind us, the currents in there were something else.

It definitely has the"whoooa!"factor Bruce.

Lost my pic-will have to find it of Corrievreckan-hot sunny day-flat calm although even then you could feel the boat being pulled this way and that and never having seen overfalls even on a calm day quite strange-anyone who dosnt know appear as a standing wave or definite sense of going thru a rapid on a river.

I have heard that the wave can get up to 3m in height definately not the place to be. one of these days I am going to camp at the waters edge just to see it close up. Is there still boat trips out to see it?

I just meant little standing waves around about where your pic was taken which you notice when otherwise a flat calm..There are several ribs that take you in to CV itself-one out from Seal Island just south of Oban. One of owners however relates how once he tried it once too often, hit the 3m standing wave head on and broke a customers leg!

Gavin Maxwell in his second Ring of Brightwater book relates how they took an old ww11 SAR launch through smashing its windscreen.

If you want to see another really spectacular EG. go to south end of Islay-water running beween S.tip and offshore Islands just looks like a large river with rapids!

But having said all this local fishermen think nothing of going thru /fishing/lobster potting in area.

we all know how fearless probably even slightly mad fishermen are but there is nothing like local knowledge.

I have been telling some of my non sailing friends about CV but they just cant grasp the power of it all, maybe have to take a trip out on the rib sometime soon.

I have a week up on the boat soon so I will have some time to do some proper exploring in those interesting and exciting places.

Bruce
