Hi, Looking for a boom tent for my yacht, any thoughts on best material and where I can get one ?

Hi Harry. How much do you want to spend? Our boom tent is a dinghy cover we bought from an ad in Yachts and Yachting about 20 years ago. I think it cost £8 and is still providing excellent service (although on the small side for the latest boat). Do you just want a square of something waterproof to keep the showers off when parked, or are you looking for something more sophisticated (eg Bimini to keep the sun off while underway)?

look up 'canvas windmill' they may be able to help. He does a damn fine job, I've seen some of his work. But he will not accept your dimensions, he insists on measuring up himself.

Some years ago a friend of ours had a very clever boom tent so that he could sleep his whole crew on a quarter tonner. The sail cover went on in the usual way and then the side panels unrolled from pockets it its sides. This way there was only one item to stow and the cover was almost inatantly available whenever you were on the mooring. I don't believe that the sailmaker who made it is still in business but I'm sure any good canvas smith could make one up.

Would love a boom tent, but my boom stops well short of transom, so any tent over will have that area uncovered ! I tried £5 tarps from B&Q and that's good enough for throwing over for quick stops etc. but looks 'orrible !! So next attempt was to buy garden umbrellas .... middle size pole diameter which actually is good fit into winch handle slots !! At the enormous cost of £3 !

Our First 25.7 has a boom tent that zips into each side of the stack pack. It's branded with Maiden Marine's logos (based in Bowness on Windermere, Cumbria), and attaches with webbing straps down to the guardrails / lifelines each side, from transom to about 2 feet forward of the cockpit, so it covers the companioway with the hatch open too. With a large window in each side, it's light enough that we can see without needing all the lights on in the cabin! Material is the same as the stack pack, genoa cover etc. The design does preclude it's use underway, either motoring or sailing, but when in the marina the extension of space it gives, and the fact that it stops the usual west coast rain from blowing straight down the hatch makes it worth the (relatively little) effort it takes to put up! Sorry, no pics at the moment with it up, I'll try to get some next week when we're back up in Oban.
