Because what I have is described as a motor sailor I have motor sailed quite a bit-so always remember even if there is only a breeze blowing in the aprox. direction you are going use some sail-genoa is usually the easiest to handle-you end up with an amazing fueleconomy even with a 40 hp engine like mine.

Likewise make sure you catch those tides.

I agree with Phil - I have a Motor Sailer and economy is easily acheved with genny or main up as well. I have a 42HP 4-107 fitted and my consumption averages 1.6 - 1.8 ltrs per hr at about 5kts. Drop the sail and then to maintain same 5kts fuel use creeps up to over 2 lt/hr. It doesn't sound much difference - but over distance can add up.

Home port to Gotland ( 18hrs at average 4.8kts) I used 30 ltrs even with little wind and most of that was near head-on. But mainsail still assisted economy.
