Hi Phil

I don't think Raymarine is planning any more free courses at the moment, but I do know East Anglian Sea School at Levington, just down the river from you, does the RYA radar course (for a fee). In the meantime, I am writing a series of articles covering the same content as the Raymarine course, which will be appearing on www.themainsail.com over the next few weeks. Hope they help.

We too have the RLC 70 and although it has now been superceded by the bigger and better C, E and G series, it is an excellent piece of kit that seems to do everything we need, and we have no plans to upgrade!

What is the name of your boat? We are at Suffolk Yacht Harbour and hope to see you on the water.

I really agree about the need for training for radar, probably more than any other piece of kit. It is easy to be lulled into thinking that what we see on the screen is really a bird's eye view of the sea around us, like a GPS plotter display, but it isn't! A lot can hide behind a nearby contact. Also, it is very easy to make a wrong turn avoidance decision using what we think we are seeing: the classic "radar assisted collision!"
