Talking to a marina manager at the weekend. Said he had thought of switching over to white diesel to save the hassle of keeping records for the taxman. But then said he had been persuaded not to because some people claimed that white diesel was "over-refined" and so not good for marine engines. Other people I know swear by running their boats on white diesel to keep the "bug" at bay, and say that red diesel in "under-refined" and so not good for marine diesels. Is this all an "urban myth"? Are there really any benefits is using white or red diesel, or are they equally good/bad?

In my opinion the only reason the diesel bug is more prevalent in boats than in cars is that firstly there is a far greater turn over of fuel throgh a car fuel tank;and secondly marine tanks whether on board or at marina fuel pump get left over long periods of time in very varied temperatures encouraging bugs to multiply. Hi Cathy and Phil, doesn't diesel at the roadside pump have all the 'goodies' in it, some of which stop diesel bug, so that some of the extra cost means you are purchasing a more advanced fuel?

There's a good article on diesel fuel issues here: http://www.proboat-digital.com/proboat/e20081011/ Under the title: So you think you know diesel. As always, it is more complex that would like.

Hi Richard, the Professional Boatbuilder on line magazine from where the diesel fuel issue is disgussed at your advised website above, looks very good. I've done a free sub and have already become absorbed in some of the info, ta Scotty

Welcome back Andrew F - I knew this site had mileage in it. David: Is there a web address re HMRC?? I get the impression they are running hot and cold. Can't imagine how they are going to monitor / enforce such an elastic regulation (sic).

Take a look at the RYA web site, its simple thev've just cut the rate to 5% on Red for marine propusion, easily policed, asyou'll understand if you've ever had to do a Vat return! Oh i just love doing a day's work for someone else and then writing a cheque to them aswell !!

David: This what I posted aboved re. HMRC Brief 49/08 dated 6 Oct 08. This refers to 5% VAT - but the road tax is astronomic and, it seems to me, likely to make white diesel cheaper for us that red.
