All very interesting.

Doxfords - yes: No one has yet mentioned the Napier Deltic - used in MCMVs and a fantastic piece of machinery.

BUT WHAT HAS ALL THIS TO DO WITH DIESEL FUEL TAXATION ???

Question:

Personally I use very litle fuel and because there are few red fuel sources where I live, I am reasonably content to use road fuel.

BUT I continue to be concerned about safety issues when high consumption vessels start to run on near-empty tanks or, perhaps, baulk at locking up some 60 litres of fuel in the tank over winter- say getting on £100 - which will lead to corrosion and condensation.

Also I don't understand how "commercial" / charter yachts can be regarded as other than "liesure". The owners may be commercial, but the charterers are just as "liesure" as I am - so through their charges they should pay the same for fuel as I do!

Do I have this right?

If you do skippered charter-whether a few in your fishing boat or a cruise liner-you are a commercial operator-no tax(actually %5).If you charter out for bareboat Eg our local motor cruiser charter firms on Loch Ness then the charterers are leisure and are not allowed to use red diesel. BUT as I have said elsewhere on here you can actually run on anything else that will work. This may well restrict you to road diesel BUT if you choose you can use veg oil/paraffin lub oil mix etc.The leglislation applied to these is only for motor vehicles running on a public highway.
