Hello all,my husband & I spent a year crossing over from Scotland over to the canaries, damage to the boat crossing to Cape Verde stopped us.Does anyone out there know how we can get my medical prescribed drugs if on the open sea for 5 years? My husband wants to go round the world, but my Doc says I cant go without my medical supplies.Any advice would be of great help.Debbie

Have you come across a book called Sell Up and Sail by Bill and Laurel Cooper? It is packed with practical advice for liveaboards including getting everything from money and post to medicines.
It recommends joining IAMAT, the non-profit-making International Association for Medical Assistance to Travellers, and making contact with MASTA (Medical Advisory Services for Travellers Abroad) which will tailor an Individual health brief (for a small fee) with details specific to each of the countries you plan to visit. www.sentex.net/iamat and www.masta.org. Also try www.doh.gov.uk/traveladvice.
Hope that helps

I think your best hope is finding a friendly doctor (probably have to do it privately) who is prepared to give you a long prescription. Or to supply repeat prescriptions by post! You may have to fly back to the UK now and then to renew your prescription, but most liveaboards end up flying home occasionally to sort out practicalities, or visit friends and family, or attend weddings and funerals etc. The important thing is not to let your medical condition prevent you from doing what you want to do, if you can possibly help it!
